Inclusion of Ranger IQA software makes the Canon scanners attractive for Check 21 applications ensuring quality capture at the source

PENSACOLA, Fl., December 15th, 2005 – Silver Bullet Technology, Inc. announced today that its Ranger® Image Quality Analysis (IQA) software is now shipping with every Canon CR-180 and Canon CR-55 check scanner sold worldwide. Bundling the IQA software along with the Canon CR-180 and CR-55 devices provides check processing organizations with a value-added check scanning solution for compliance with Check 21 practices. The Ranger IQA software helps avoid the time and expense associated with capturing and sending poor check images to other financial institutions. The CR-180 and CR-55 Check Transport devices combined with the Silver Bullet Ranger IQA software help reduce the barrier to electronic check clearance in the U.S.

Silver Bullet’s IQA software is a standard part of the Ranger Check 21 toolkit. Ranger IQA reduces the cost and processing time by detecting check image quality defects at point of capture. The Ranger IQA software – shipping with the CR-180 and CR-55 devices – performs fourteen various image quality checks at the point of capture to help ensure proper check scanning has occurred. If the captured image fails any of the fourteen tests – listed below – the image is flagged to be reviewed at a later time before further processing occurs. The Ranger IQA image tests support FSTC and ANSI X9B image quality standards. Ranger IQA was used by FSTC in their benchmark study to determine the frequency of image defects among checks in the banking industry.

“The financial institutions are only just learning the operational impacts of discovering image defects late in the payment processing stream,” said Ray Higgins, director of business development for Silver Bullet. “Banks are learning that performing IQA at point of capture provides the best opportunity of eliminating image defects before they enter the payment clearing system.”

“Canon is always seeking to deliver superior business solutions to help customers leverage the latest industry developments. More than just top of the line devices, the Canon CR-55 and CR-180 check scanners bundled with the Ranger IQA software now provide customers with a cost-effective check scanning solution,” comments Mark Machida, director, Image Filing Systems Division for Canon U.S.A. “This was a natural marriage of an industry-leading application interface with industry-leading scanning hardware.”

The CR-55 Check Transport is a compact, countertop scanning system offering rapid, high quality image capture at the first point of presentation to speed check clearing time and reduce overall expenses. The CR-55 complements the durable CR-180 Check Transport – Canon’s successful high-volume, high-speed back office scanning system used by banks, credit unions, check-clearing houses and large retail operations. Both the CR-55 and the CR-180 deliver full-compliance with international standards for reading MICR characters, including CMC7 and E13B.
